Psychotherapy

My clinical practice is focused on evidence-based psychological treatments to address insomnia, nightmares, chronic pain, and posttraumatic stress disorder. I also have a limited number of therapy slots focused on depression, anxiety, or perinatal/reproductive mental health concerns. Read on to learn about a few of the types of therapy that I offer, along with the estimated number of sessions for completion. After an initial assessment, therapy typically starts with weekly sessions focused on reaching your individual goals. Once you complete a treatment and reach your goals, we can discuss wrapping therapy altogether or continuing at a reduced frequency.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I): 4-8 Sessions

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as the gold standard for the treatment of Insomnia Disorder. Research suggests that CBT-I works as well as or better than sleep medications for improving sleep quality and quantity. In therapy, you will learn techniques such as stimulus control, relaxation, and cognitive flexibility to improve your sleep. You will also receive personalized recommendations to improve your sleep efficiency based on your unique sleep-wake patterns. CBT-I is so much more than just sleep hygiene, and can be life changing for people who struggle with insomnia.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Nightmares (CBT-N/IRT): 4-6 Sessions

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Nightmares (CBT-N) is a short-term, evidence-based treatment designed to treat chronic, distressing nightmares. Whether the nightmares are caused by trauma or unknown factors, CBT-N can help through a combination of improving overall sleep quality while also targeting the nightmares directly. The treatment includes Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT): rescripting the nightmare to a dream with a new storyline and ending. This mental technique creates an “off-road” for the mind to go while dreaming when it starts to head toward a nightmare. IRT is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as the first-line treatment for both nightmare disorder and PTSD-related nightmares

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain (ACT-CP): 8-12 Sessions

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain (ACT-CP) targets the brain-body connection to help you improve daily functioning and live a life of meaning and purpose. In therapy, you will identify your primary values and goals, take committed action, learn the difference between pain and suffering, and develop your mindfulness practice. ACT-CP is focused on cultivating an acceptance of pain and negative emotion that can ultimately lead to freedom.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP): 8-12 Sessions

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) is a short-term, goal-oriented, structured treatment designed to improve distress related to chronic pain. In CBT-CP you'll learning cognitive skills to reframe negative thinking patterns, relaxation skills to alleviate pain intensity, and behavioral strategies to help you reengage in meaningful activities.

Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT): 12-15 Sessions

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is focused on changing unhelpful, trauma-related thoughts and beliefs that have prevented you from recovering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). CPT is considered a first-line, recommended treatment for PTSD by major treatment guidelines, such as those produced by the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the World Health Organization. During therapy, you will learn cognitive skills that promote recovery that you can continue to use after therapy ends. In CPT, we also explore five themes that are frequently impacted by trauma: safety, trust, power and control, esteem, and intimacy.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD (PE): 8-15 Sessions

Prolonged Exposure (PE) helps you reclaim your life after trauma by processing intrusive memories and confronting the cycle of avoidance. PE is considered a first-line, recommended treatment for PTSD by major treatment guidelines, such as those produced by the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the World Health Organization. During therapy, you will practice experiencing difficult emotions and memories in a safe environment. Between sessions you will gradually practice re-engaging in activities or situations that you have been avoiding due to overwhelming anxiety or fear.

Good Faith Estimate

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
